Key Stage 1 & 2

Welcome to Key Stage 1 & 2

Key Stage 1 is a very important step in a child’s primary school experience. During this time your child will be encouraged to work more independently and will be well supported to achieve their full potential. In addition to the Year 1 Phonics screening Check, pupils' learning will culminate in the Key Stage 1 SATs assessment at the end of Year 2.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check A Guide for Parents

At NPS, we follow the national curriculum, whilst continually developing the content to meet the needs of our children. The school uses a cross-curricular approach to teaching and learning. This means that skills, knowledge and understanding across a range of subjects are brought together in different subjects. Our Curriculum Overviews show each year group’s overview, in addition to the half termly  topic webs we send out to parents.

As pupils enter Key Stage 2 they continue to have opportunities to share their learning with each other, their parents and carers and other learners through school-based or external presentations, performances, competitions and events involving other schools. Developing their independence and motivation as learners and their sense of responsibility as future citizens is at the heart of all our teaching and learning.

At Key Stage 1 & 2 pupils learn the following subjects:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Art and Design
  • Computing
  • Design and Technology
  • Geography
  • History
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Religious Education (Our World)
