At NPS our pupils understand the core skills and attitudes needed to learn in PE with the use of the school curriculum character – PE Peter.  This character is regularly used to encourage pupils to reflect on the key skills, attitudes and knowledge needed when learning in PE.

We are in school to Acquire the knowledge and skills that will allow us to Achieve our aims and go on to what we Aspire to do.

Our aspiration for every learner (intent):

At NPS we aim to inspire all pupils to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through high quality physical education, our school SHARE values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient pupils who will strive for their personal best. We listen to our pupils’ wants and needs and provide them with a range of active experiences and clubs. We want to aid our pupils in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes.

We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all pupils to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We strive to educate both our pupils and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our pupils’ well-being. We have strong links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure pupils and families receive the support and knowledge they need.

How we support pupils to acquire this learning (implementation):

Our PE lessons are planned using the Get Set 4 PE platform, which aligns with our core values, our whole child approach to PE and the objectives laid out in the National Curriculum. Get Set 4 PE is planned so that progression is built into the scheme which ensures our pupils are increasingly challenged as they move up through the school. We create a broad and balanced curriculum that is exciting for our pupils to learn through. Our medium-term plans give details of each unit of work for each term. These schemes of work provide an overview of the unit, links to other areas of the National Curriculum and assessment criteria for that unit. We provide opportunities for pupils of all abilities to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding in each activity area.

In the EYFS we encourage the physical development of our pupils in Reception as an integral part of their work. As these classes are part of the Foundation Stage of the National Curriculum, we relate the physical development of the pupils to the objectives set out in the Early Learning Goals, which underpin the curriculum planning for pupils aged three to five years of age. We encourage the pupils to develop confidence and control of the way they move, and the way they handle tools and equipment. We give all pupils the opportunity to undertake activities that offer appropriate physical challenge, both indoors and outdoors, using a wide range of resources to support specific skills.

We have built connections with the wider PE community and regularly take part in borough and inter house competitions across the MAT. Across the school year, we celebrate national and world wide sporting events with competitions. Yearly, we take part in active events such as Sports Day, Sports Week and a Gymnastics and Dance Show. We work closely with other partnerships to deliver extra-curricular clubs during lunchtimes and after school. These range term by term covering a variety of skills and sports e.g Athletics, Cricket, Gymnastics.

How we measure achievements (impact):

Our teachers assess pupils’ work in PE, both by making informal judgements as they observe them during lessons, and through assessing against the specific objectives set out in the National Curriculum and recorded using the Get Set 4 PE assessment software. We have clear expectations of what the pupils will know, understand and be able to do at the end of each Key Stage. Teachers are supported with resources to know how to prepare pupils for their next phase of education. These resources include the Get Set 4 PE progression of skills document, progression ladders and knowledge organisers. In addition to this:

  • Pupils are able to compete with themselves and others respectfully, remaining resilient when faced with challenges
  • Pupils are able to evaluate their own and others’ performance, competently sharing knowledge and strategies of how performance can be improved
  • Teachers are aware of the pupils’ level and constantly reflect on how they can achieve their next steps
  • Pupils are aware of the rules and vocabulary of a range of sporting activities, with an understanding of how tactics can impact their performance
  • Regular verbal feedback is given within lessons to praise and ensure children are apply the correct technique
  • Pupil discussions used at the end of lessons to reflect on learning including successes and areas of improvement

PE lessons encourage pupils to compete against themselves and others whilst being challenged to improve their physical, social, emotional and thinking skills. We aim to develop pupils’ basic physical competencies, build confidence in their ability and build the foundations for a lifelong love of sport, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.
