Geography stimulates our curiosity about the natural and human worlds, about places and people from the local area to distant countries and about our precious and fragile environment. It allows us to think about how we live and the impact this has on the planet.


Throughout the KS3 course students will study the basic concepts of Geography. An enquiry based approach will enable students to develop their geographical skills, knowledge and understanding. Focusing on real people, places and issues for inspiration will encourage students to take an active approach in learning about the world around them, helping them to understand the relevance of Geography in their lives.

Levelled assessments will be set for each unit studied and will form part of the student's KS3 Geography Portfolio. Along with ongoing marking of students' books, this will be used as an indicator towards their level of attainment.

Studying geography leads directly to dozens of careers, and is a big help for many other careers like these: Travel agent, reporter, sports and leisure, commerce and finance, teaching, meteorology, architect, designer, the armed forces and so on." We follow the OCR exam syllabus at GCSE and there are four different themes to be studied;

  • Theme 1; Rivers and Coasts
  • Theme 2: Population and Settlement
  • Theme 3: Natural Hazards
  • Theme 4: Economic Development

The aim of the course is to encourage students to take an active role in their learning; developing decision-making and problem solving skills; along with geographical techniques and knowledge. Real work situations are emphasised and fieldwork plays an important part in the course.


The final grade will be based upon controlled assessment and examinations.

Controlled Assessment 25%
There is one piece of controlled assessment with a fieldwork focus and is 2000 words. Controlled assessment will be carried out in the Spring Term of Year 10 and will follow a one day field trip.

Examination 75 %
Students will sit a tiered examination and will be entered for either the Foundation Tier or Higher Tier.

  • Foundation Tier G - C
  • Higher Tier D - A*

There are two exam papers. The first paper is worth 25% and will be based on one of the four themes. This exam is 90 minutes. The second exam is worth 50% of the final grade. This paper is the Key Geographical Themes paper and is one hour 45 minutes long.

Assessments will be set throughout each Unit studied along with ongoing marking of students' books. This will be used as an indicator towards which entry tier students will sit in the terminal exams.


At GNSA we follow the Edexcel exam syllabus. In Year 12 we study Global Challenges. This includes two units.

Unit 1 - ‘World at risk and Globalisation.’ The exam is 90 minutes and is worth 60% of the final grade. It comprises of short data response answers and essay style questions.

Unit 2 - ‘Rebranding ‘and ‘Coasts’ and is worth 40%. Both exams will be sat in Summer of Year 12 and a four-day residential trip to Devon will take place in order to prepare for this exam.

In year 13 we study Units 3 and 4.

Unit 3 - ‘Contested Planet’ and it is based on 6 themes linked to topical geography including: energy, water conflicts, biodiversity, superpowers, the development gap and techno fix. It is worth 60% of the final grade.

Unit 4 - ‘Health and Pollution.’ The exam is sat at the end of year 13 and is worth 40% of the final grade.
