Early Years Foundation Stage

Welcome to Reception

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, we believe that every child deserves the best possible start to their school life. The Foundation Stage is a vital time in which our pupils settle into school life and are supported to become happy, confident and independent learners, within a nurturing and stimulating learning environment.

All Reception classes have bilingual staff to support pupils with their early development of language. Staff are approachable, friendly and always there to help.

The Early Years Curriculum

In the Early Years there are seven areas of learning and development that shape the educational provision within our setting. We  value  all  areas  of  learning  and development equally and understand that they are often inter-connected. Three prime areas are particularly crucial for igniting   children’s   curiosity   and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

The three prime areas are:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Physical development
  • Communication and language

Further support to strengthen the prime areas will be provided specifically through:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Learning Experiences

Children’s play is an essential and rich part of their learning process, supporting them in all areas of development. Play- based activities range between carefully planned and prepared opportunities, to child initiated momentary experiences. Staff also take into account the individual needs,   interests,   and   stage   of development of each child in their care and  use  this  information  to  plan  an enjoyable and challenging curriculum. We continually seek to bring the curriculum to life, providing hands-on and memorable learning experiences for all pupils, in line with the texts and topics within the curriculum.

Parent Partnership

We recognise that parents are central to a child’s well-being and parents will therefore be encouraged to participate in their child's early learning through parent workshops and initiatives like ‘Stay and Play’ sessions. By the end of the Foundation Stage we aim for all pupils to achieve a Good Level of Development, achieving at least an ‘expected’ judgement in line with the Early Learning Goal Descriptors.

The Reception team works very closely with parents through an online learning journal called Tapestry, to continually share learning and achievements.Tapestry is a secure online Learning Journal to record photos, observations and comments, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. This builds up a record of the child’s experiences during their time at NPS.
