At NPS our pupils understand the core skills needed to learn in PSHE with the use of the school curriculum character – Penny PSHE.  This character is regularly used to encourage pupils to reflect on the key skills, attitudes and knowledge needed when learning in PSHE.

We are in school to Acquire the knowledge and skills that will allow us to Achieve our aims and go on to what we Aspire to do.

Our aspiration for every learner (intent):

Our aim is for all pupils to leave Nanaksar Primary with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our pupils to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they have good mental health and well-being.

Our PSHE curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills, which will enable pupils to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a diverse society. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our pupils to understand the importance of stable and loving relationships, family, respect, love and care. The curriculum provides pupils with age appropriate information, allowing them to explore attitudes and values and develop skills empowering them to make positive decisions about their health-related behaviour. The pupils will learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

How we support pupils to acquire this learning (implementation):

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, PSHE and citizenship is taught as an integral part of topic work and is embedded throughout the curriculum and forms part of the Personal, Social and Emotional Development Early Learning Goal. Reception also uses the Jigsaw Scheme of Work materials covering the following topics each half term: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Differences, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me.

At Key Stage 1 and 2, PSHE is taught through a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. We ensure we cover the Health and Well-Being, Relationships and Living in the Wider World Learning Opportunities set out in the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study, which covers the statutory Health Education and Relationships Education guidance.

Lessons are delivered using a range of teaching styles, including but not limited to, group discussions, circle time, drama, problem solving and stories. These weekly lessons are delivered in addition to the daily practises of mindfulness, emotional regulation, and skills built through daily ‘Calm Time’ and our Colour Monster check-in time to support pupils with self regulation.

Our learning is represented through class floor books, which celebrate pupils’ learning and provides an effective aid for recapping prior learning.

All units of work are set out half termly and link closely with safeguarding, the school ethos and SHARE values, British values, a growth mindset and current affairs.

How we measure achievements (impact):

We aim to ensure that all pupils become engaged, active and responsible citizens who recognise and value their contribution to society. By the time our pupils leave Nanaksar Primary School they will:
